Cosmetic Laser and Intense Pulsed Light devices are effective in permanent hair removal because they destroy the capacity of the follicle to produce a hair. The hair itself, particularly light colored hair, is a poor transmitter of the photon energy that needs to reach the follicle in order to do its job. Even dark hair has only about a 50% efficiency rating in turning the laser or pulsed light energy into the heat that is needed to destroy the follicle.

While diode lasers and intense pulsed light systems can be used without hair being removed or shaved before the treatment has begun, many practitioners remove the hair prior to treatment, either by waxing or tweezing the area to be treated. With the follicle empty, the carbon dye is not only necessary, the end result is much more effective.

The dye prepares the empty hair follicle to have up to 99% of the photon energy focused on the follicle tissue below the skin, resulting in a much more effective treatment, and a client who is much more pleased with the practitioner's work.
