Although the Gambia is one of Africa's most artificial states geographically, it has nevertheless become very much of a political reality and would doubtlessly be listed among the more successful experiences in nation building. A narrow sliver of land along the river that gives it sustenance, the Gambia resulted from a long history of conflict among the European colonial powers that almost ended with its disappearance. This history is particularly well traced by Professor Gailey, who also gives considerable insight as to why this "improbable" nation is now doing so well and has shown less eagerness that ever at forming part of a Senegambian entity.
