The masters of action-oriented fan service who brought you Ikki Tousen are back with a brutally busty bloodletting that Anime New Networks calls "lewd and sadistic!" Eager to follow in the footsteps of his fallen sister, Kazuya enrolls at West Genetics Academy, a training facility for buxom heroes known as Pandoras. These courageous schoolgirls are genetically-enhanced with enough sex appeal to cripple a man - and the superhuman strength to slaughter aliens by the dozen. Kazuya's role is that of Limiter, a Pandora's battle partner, and he quickly sets his sights on the most feared beauty in school, Satellizer el Brigette. This full-figured annihilator of aliens is as desirable as she is deadly, but rubbing her the wrong way could lead to gross bodily harm. Can Kazuya forge a bond with his new partner and rise to the top of the ranks at West Genetics? Or will he fall victim to the mysterious bloodlust lurking within Satellizer?
Based on a Japanese-Korean manga,
Freezing (2011) blends elements of the magical girl and harem comedy genres into a violent, fan service sci-fi series. In the not-too-distant future, Earth has been attacked by aliens called Nova. These anthropomorphic monsters can only be defeated by Pandoras, teenage girls who use the power of their "stigmata" to generate special fighting abilities. They're assisted by Limiters, boys who block the Nova's defenses, enabling the Pandoras to destroy the aliens. The unprepossessing Kazuya Aoi arrives at West Genetics Academy and immediately encounters Bridgette L. Satellizer, a.k.a. "the Untouchable Queen," the top second-year Pandora-in-training. Needless to say, Kazuya overcomes Satellizer's icy demeanor and bonds with her. The story is minimal, even by the undemanding standards of fan service series. The Nova appear only in flashbacks until episode 9, and the characters don't actually fight them until episode 11. Satellizer and other Pandora students spend most of their time fighting each other in duels that inevitably begin with the combatants' tops getting ripped off and end with blood flying. Like most harem comedy heroes, Kazuya remains well intentioned and wimpy, but the other characters are nasty and vindictive. The nugatory storyline borrows heavily, often shamelessly, from
Sekirei and
Evangelion. Mean-spirited and misogynistic,
Freezing will appeal to hormonal teenage boys who value nudity and violence over story, characterization, and taste. The six mini-OVAs feature the characters stripping and fondling each others' breasts. (Rated TV MA; suitable for ages over 17: nudity, graphic violence, violence against women, potentially offensive religious imagery, alcohol use, risqué humor, suggested child molestation)
