Nintendo boss slates iPad

Associated press reported that Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, referred to the iPad as merely a “bigger iPod touch” with no surprises. The new Apple tablet device officially announced last week, will appear with 3D gaming technology which, according to Iwata, is nothing to get excited about.

“I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home,” he said. Yet the from the owner of the company that capitalised on motion sensory gaming, he cannot deny gamers’ fervent desire for the games to be more realistic, and 3D technology may a step towards it.

Rumours have been prolific in Japanese media that Nintendo will be releasing DS with the Wii’s motion sensor capabilities or a Wii upgraded for hi-definition TV. Iwata denied the speculation. Companies like Sony are currently investigation 3D technology for television as 3D looks set to be the next big thing according to predictors.

Perhaps the slating of the iPad is Iwata’s reaction to the poor Wii sales over the last quarter. According to Business Week, Nintendo sales between April and December fell by 9.4 percent as sales of Wii consoles slowed. The company only sold 17.05 million consoles during the period, as opposed to 20.52 million during the same period the year before.
