Another triumph in Archeophone's celebrated Phonographic Yearbook series! Woodrow Wilson won re-election in 1916 over Republican Charles Evans Hughes on a campaign that boasted "He Kept Us Out of War," but at the same time Wilson was busy handling America's conflict with Mexico, preparations for which would serve as a prelude to U.S. entry into World War I. English anthems, such as "Keep the Home Fires Burning," became popular stateside and bespoke the coming tide of sacrifice. Meanwhile, the front pages in 1916 focused on new laws protecting workers and child laborers, while activist Emma Goldman stirred up the masses as she fought for women's rights. Fascination with things Hawaiian is reflected in songs like "Yaaka Hoola Hickey Doola" by Al Jolson and "Oh! How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo" by Collins and Harlan, and advances in wireless telephony are heralded and parodied in "Hello, Hawaii, How Are You?" by Billy Murray. Artists Anna Chandler, John McCormack, Joseph Cawthorn, Frederick Wheeler (aka James Harrison), and Marguerite Farrell make their first appearance on a Phonographic Yearbook. A stunningly beautiful 24-page full-color booklet with extensive notes and an historical essay by Gigi Thibodeau accompanies the CD.
