Saint Dymphna was the daughter of anIrish chieftan, named Damon, and beautiful devotedChristian woman whose name has never beenknown. Her mother died when she was only 14.Wrought with grief over his wife's death, Damonbecame mentally ill and began to search for a newbride resembling his wife. When none could be found,his maddened grief lead him to make advances on hisbeautiful daughter.

Saint Dymphna fought off his advances andfled to Belgium. After an extensive search,her father found her in Gheel, Belgium.Damon demanded that she return with himto Ireland. When she refused, he drew his swordin rage and struck off her head.

The crown of martyrdom was bestowed upon SaintDymphna about the year 620. Many people sufferingwith Alzheimer's Disease have been miraculouslyhealed at Saint Dymphna's shrine in Gheel, Belgium.
