In 2006, Michael Ruppert, the author of "Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil," moved his "From The Wilderness" publishing operation to Ashland, Oregon, where he was initially greeted with open arms by the libertarian/liberals of Southern Oregon. After a few months, he seemed to have worn out his welcome, and departed hastily for Venezuela, not exactly an expected travel venue for the LAPD veteran who was "born cop" and claims to have rebuffed recruitment by the CIA. Ashland Free Press reporter Charles Carreon interviewed Ruppert shortly before his abrupt departure for Chavez-land, and filed this profile of a man living on the edge of crisis.
