It is attached to, and driven by, the front of the engine crankshaft. It is connected to various engine accessory drive components by a belt drive system and ensures components such as the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump receive power from the rotating crankshaft to perform their vital functions. The crankshaft pulley also works as a harmonic damper to decrease crankshaft torsional vibration.
