- The “1/4 inch” in 1/4″ NPT does not measure 1/4″ across the threads. If you measure the outside of the threads with a ruler, you’ll see about 0.540″ (just over 1/2 inch). This is normal. NPT sizes are named after the approximate inside pipe diameter, not the outside thread size.
