Akin to other regional spice blends like the various curry powders in India, the recipes of Berbere Spice too differs from region to region, from family to family. This blend, in particular, is made to be flavorful but not too overwhelmingly hot.

Berbere spice is used in seasoning meat and vegetable dishes. Rub on chicken or ribs, add a tiny bit to scrambled eggs or even on toast. Berbere is also used to make Awaze Sauce, a kind of Ethiopian hot sauce.
