The male has a mane, but the Lioness does not. Lions live in an extended family in which the females and their babies are the majority. The tasks are well distributed. The males protect and defend the females and their babies, but the lionesses go hunting. During the day they rest and at night they go hunting. Lions are pure carnivores. They can eat up to 35 KG of meat in a single meal. If the Lioness is expecting a baby, she retreats to hide and remains there for up to 8 weeks with the baby. After that time she goes back to the pride. The Cub is then suckled for up to 6 months by their mother and other lionesses that have babies themselves.
