Choosing A Higher Purpose: A guide for agnostics/atheists in early recovery

Choosing A Higher Purpose is a brief guide for agnostics/atheists struggling with religious and spiritual issues inherent to Twelve Step programs. Choosing A Higher Purpose advises agnostics and atheists to substitute a higher purpose for a Higher Power.

This guide asks agnostics/atheists to stay clean and sober while they sort through what they believe and why they believe or disbelieve as they do. Further, Choosing a Higher Purpose suggests practicing the daily disciplines others in recovery practice. These disciplines include taking stock, writing a gratitude list, and going to Twelve Step meetings.

Choosing a Higher Purpose recommends picking a purpose that involves others, reduces the burden of self, and allows the recovering person to look back on his or her day with pride. CHP asks the reader to pick concrete goals as part of their purpose. For example, 'being a nicer person' is a worthy goal, but not very concrete. "volunteering three days a week at the food bank" is both worthy and concrete.

Choosing a Higher Purpose assures the reader that while individual AA or NA group members may disagree with his or her decision to pick a higher purpose, Twelve Step groups are open to anyone who wants to overcome an addiction.
