Fluted Sides
Fluted sides allow for even glue distribution while allowing any trapped air/glue to exit the hole.

Beveled Ends
Having a slight taper at each end doesn't just make alignment easier, in cases where there are multiple dowels in use (where it's likely that you could be a bit off with some of the holes) it's an absolute must!
