Highly detailed 1/350 scale assembly model kit of the USS Laffey (DD-459), a Benson-class destroyer of the United States Navy during World War II. Commissioned on March 31, 1942, the DD-459 Laffey saw her first fleet action alongside Admiral Norman Scott's cruiser group in the Battle of Cape Esperance (October 1942), where her 5-inch guns badly damaged IJN heavy cruiser Aoba. DD-459 Laffey next saw action during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 1942), where she was engaged by a group of two battleships, one light cruiser and 14 destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy under Vice Admiral Hiroaki Abe. The DD-459 Laffey's crew fought heroically during the battle despite being out-gunned and out-numbered, but she was finally sunk by Japanese 14-inch shells and torpedoes and took heavy casualties. Laffey was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for her performance in the South Pacific, and three battle stars for service in World War II. This beautifully detailed 1/350 scale model kit by Dragon Models accurately recreates the DD-495 Laffey with all her glory, and the kit features: Newly tooled flat-sided funnels for Benson class destroyers like USS Laffey. Realistic photo-etched funnel caps gills, funnel platform, and superstructure mounted K-gun cranes. Forward superstructure deck retooled for close mounted 20 mm gun tubs. New lower profile platform for 36-inch searchlight. 6 realistic 1/350 scale figures included. New self adhesive flexible material for signal flags.
