At his return from the Gallic Campaigns, he provoked a Civil war against Pompey by crossing the Rubicon river without dismissing his army. He eventually beat Pompey and became life-time dictator of Rome, only to be killed soon after by a group of senators. His grand nephew Ocatavian (later declared Augustus) would follow his lead and aspire to building Rome into one of the greatest empires of all time.
