Gilding Pad 6"x9"
- Surface material: The pad is covered in genuine leather or suede, which provides a non-slip, anti-static surface for working with loose leaf. The suede is soft enough to not damage the delicate metal leaf. Some pads may come in different leather colors like black, brown, or blue.
- Cutting platform: The firm but forgiving surface is designed to be a base for cutting gold, silver, or other metal leaf into smaller pieces using a special gilder's knife. A very thin film of pumice powder is sometimes rubbed into the cushion to degrease the surface before use.
- Hand and knife straps: The underside of the pad includes a leather strap to secure it to the gilder's hand, similar to a painter's palette. This allows the gilder to hold the pad with one hand while cutting the leaf with the other. Some models also feature a smaller loop to hold the gilder's knife.
- Optional windshield: Some gilding pads come with a parchment or paper windshield attached to one end to protect the fragile leaf from air currents or breath. Other pads are made without this shield.
- How it is used: Loose gold or metal leaf is transferred from a booklet onto the static-free pad. Using a gilder's knife, the leaf is cut into the desired shapes or sizes. A gilder's tip (a flat brush) is then used to pick up the cut leaf from the pad, which is then applied to the gilded surface.
- You may receive Brown, Black, or Blue leather, depending on available material. All are guaranteed to work the same.
