It is one of many songs written by George Jones, a fact so often overshadowed by his incredible vocals. George Jones' beautiful, but heartrending, vocals on "Window Up Above" made it a huge #2-hit in 1960. Jones' touching "Tender Years" was a #1-hit in 1961.
