Kafr El-Elow: Continuity and Change in an Egyptian Community

The village of Kafr el-Elow was chosen for an ethnographic study not only because of its proximity to Cairo, but also because of its location in the midst of Egypt's largest industrial complex. Thus it is possible to explore the impact of urbanization and industrialization processes upon the social institutions of this traditional folk-peasant culture. Indeed, the people of Kafr el-Elow experience and adjust to the winds of enormous economic and social forces, yet hold steadfastly to many of their social values.
