Bird of paradise flowers are named after the birds they are said to resemble, birds-of-paradise. A member of the banana family, the flowers are also known as "Crane Flowers". Native to the Cape of Good Hope region of South Africa, bird of paradise flowers were first introduced to China in the late 18th century.

The original birds were already a major status symbol in China, long before the first flowers appeared. The mythical Chinese phoenix or Fenghuang, was said to be part bird of Paradise. Fenghuang is the ultimate yin symbol, femininity personified.
