The most lethal weapon in the NBA is the three-point shot. The three-point line has been growing in popularity since its inception during the 1979-80 NBA season. It was rarely utilized back in the ’80s but became a secondary threat in the ’90s when shooters such as Chris Mullin and Reggie Miller made the shot famous. During the 2000s, its usage increased with run-and-gun systems such as Don Nelson’s Golden State Warriors and the Mike D'Antoni Phoenix Suns. However, the popular belief back then was that the three-point shot was not a reliable weapon to be used by championship teams.
But in today's modern era of basketball, the three-point shot has been used more than it has ever been in the past. The best teams in the league adopt the three-point shot as a primary weapon today where the concept of pace-and-space has been widely used. The Miami Heat won back-to-back titles by surrounding LeBron James with shooters. The San Antonio Spurs then attained a title in 2014 by spacing the floor well with shooters while moving the ball so quickly that defenses were not able to react.
Arguably the greatest team to have ever used the three-point shot as its most lethal weapon are today's Golden State Warriors team. While it has always been a widespread belief that a jump-shooting team cannot win a championship, the Warriors did it in 2015 by making their three-pointers at a high rate.
