Youth Hockey, as is any youth sport, is a great way to teach your kids about life and the lessons they will encounter. Take the opportunity to use the game as a teaching tool. Show your kids what good sportsmanship is all about; don't just talk about it. Don't make excuses or place blame on someone else because of a loss. Don't put pressure on your kids to do something that if the truth were known you yourself would find hard to do. Talk to them about how important good character is on and off the ice. And most importantly, just like in real life, tell them that things will not always go the way they planned. Sometimes, you learn more from losing than from winning. A great thing to remember is that even when a sport isn't used to build character, it will definitely reveal it.
