Lonely Graves: a Texas Murder Trilogy

Journalist and novelist Pete Hamill once said, â€œThere is a growing feeling that perhaps Texas is really another country, a place where the skies, the disasters, the diamonds, the politicians, the women, the fortunes, the football players and the murders are all bigger than anywhere else.â€

For a boy who grew up on the streets of New York City, thatâ€™s a pretty bold observation, but perhaps true, especially concerning the murders.

Case in point:

October 1897: a Panhandle, Texas Methodist minister decides to slip his faithful wife of seventeen years a lethal dose of strychnine the day after their 17th wedding anniversary in order to marry a wealthy socialite. A Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court wrote about the case â€œThe facts show for deliberate fiendishness, they are almost without parallel in the annals of criminal jurisprudence.â€

Christmas Eve 1926: authorities in Farwell, Texas discover the worst case of family annihilation this country has ever recorded after unearthing the remains of eight children and their mother. Andâ€¦this was not the first family the perpetrator had murdered and buried. While incarcerated he wove doilies for jail visitors and for the jurors.

June 1930: in Amarillo, Texas a peaceful summer morning turns into pandemonium when a blonde colored Durant drives through the gates of the quaint Country Club Addition and suddenly explodes hurling metal and body parts all over the neighborhood. The lawyer husband aided authorities in the investigation.

There was a time when all six subjectsâ€™ names, husbands and the wives they killed were notoriously famous and news services carried the latest details in each case to newspapers all over the country. Today all lie in Lonely Graves, where only occasional curiosity seekers visit the sites.
