Madame Bovary (1856) is the first published novel of Gustave Flaubert and is regarded as his masterpiece. Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary, a woman unhappily married to a doctor, who seeks escape from the deadening boredom of the emptiness of the life in the province through forbidden relationships with other men. Madame Bovary is now considered a seminal work of Realism and one of the most influential novels ever written. Its influence is somewhat too pervasive to be even visible.

Gustave Flaubert (December 12, 1821 â€“ May 8, 1880) was a French novelist of the realistic era. He is considered one of the greatest Western writers. Flaubert was a pure stylist. He avoided the inexact expressions, abstract or not quite fitting writing which plague ordinary writing. He hated clichÃ©s. This explains the inordinate amount of time he spent on some his works, writing and rewriting portions. He also was averse to bourgeois stupidity. Madame Bovary is his masterpiece.
