12-Pounder Light Gun known as the "Napoleon"The Napoleon gun was so commonly used simply because it was as good as its forerunners, but lighter and more portable. It was widely used because it worked so well. Solid shot, explosive shell, spherical case shot (containing many small balls) and canister could be shot with lethal effect. Successful range was about 1000 yards, and greatest range was just about one mile. Rifled cannons could shoot a greater distance and more precisely, but were not so successful with canisters. Confederate ammunition for rifled guns suffered from such damaging faults that Southern gunners were especially attracted to the usage of Napoleons.
