VPD (visco-elastic polymer dough) is also highly flexible until impact, at which point it hardens instantly to dissipate force. This design means the Spine Vest is easy to wear under a pack or on the skin track, so you don't have to sacrifice full protection when you're out in the backcountry or pedaling up before a gnarly downhill.
