Salicylic acid is a substance derived from the bark of a willow tree. It is an organic phenol beta hydroxy acid. This natural compound is used to treat a variety of skin problems from acne and calluses, to seborrhic dermatitis and psoriasis. Salicylic acid is probably most well-known for its acne fighting and exfoliation. Why is it such an effective treatment for acne? Acne is caused by a bacteria called propionibacterium acnes, and this bacteria thrives when the pH of your skin goes up. As a plus, the skin becomes more prone to damage and infection when it becomes more basic, so you can reduce your risk by making your skin more acidic. In general, your skin being acidic protects it from fungi and bacteria. Acne is formed when skin cells inside hair follicles shed too fast and clumps together, plugging up the follicle and causing a pimple. Salicylic acid also helps break down blackheads and whiteheads.
