When I was a boy, I played with die-cast metal tanks. My friend Todd and I fought long battles with our toy armies. As we grew older, we started building plastic models of tanks and playing war games like Avalon Hill's Squad Leader.
We went to different colleges, but we both joined the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). I joined the Armor Branch. I led a platoon of M1A1 Abrams tanks (1st Platoon, D Co., 2/69 Armor) in the First Gulf War.
I am also a gamer. I've played D&D for about 30 years now. I've played computer games since I loaded the first Microsoft Flight Simulator onto the family IBM PC Jr, and discovered a WWI dogfight game in it.
Much of the technology at my fingertips now, and in the First Gulf War, didn't exist in WWII, and isn't in the WWII online FPS game, World of Tanks (hereafter, WoT).
That said, a lot of my tactical memories still apply to the game - and clearly aren't known to many of the players. Thus this guide. I hope it helps you enjoy this terrific game.
