- SAILING ESSENTIALS - Marlin Spike Tools are used extensively in sailing and boating marine ropework. This handly and light-weight tool is used to untie stubborn or stuck knots, unlaying rope for splicing, drawing marlin tight using a marlinspike hitch, and also forcing open shackles that may have rusted. There are two more practical uses that we enjoy: one is to open last season's cans of varnish or paint, and the last one is to use your Marlin Spike Tool to help lift or drag heavy objects.
