Shoplifter Robert is sent to an experimental Young Offenders Unit at Clarkbridge Cathedral College where he is subjected to traditional corporal punishment by Archdeacon and Mrs Sankey, Ruth Spatchcock the House Matron, Darlene Wink, his Form Mistress and Barbara Flack, the track-suited gym instructor, as well as the Head Boy, the Chemistry Master and a pair of trainee nurses. He falls for Valerie Buckle the young and inexperienced new English teacher and helps her to impress the severe Archdeacon. When Valerie is selected for a more senior appointment and leaves Clarkbridge, Robert is thrown into despair. To make matters worse, the experimental Unit is closed and Robert and the other young offenders are to be sent to grim Reformatories. To Robertâ€™s surprise, he is taken to a Girlsâ€™ Reformatory where he becomes the Wardenâ€™s Housekeeper. He falls foul of the Chief Officer, Alison Steele, who thrashes him regularly. But, after a twist in his tale, he finds happiness at last.
