The BOOB Girls X: Gospel Bird
Robbie smiled at them, reached into her computer case and pulled out a beautiful hardback book of Robert Service poems. “I wanted the gold and I got it,†Alphonso said as Robbie put the big book on their table and opened it. What she read was magic. There was The Spell of the Yukon and as she read the last stanza, they were all watching her with rapt attention. Without Robbie realizing it, the entire restaurant had become quiet, listening and watching. It’s the great, big, broad land ‘way up yonder, It’s the forests where silence has lease; It’s the beauty that fills me with wonder, It’s the stillness that fills me with peace. Still not aware that she was reading to a fairly good-sized crowd, Robbie read the entire The Heart of the Sourdough and went right on to the next page for The Law of the Yukon. When she looked up and took a breath she saw everyone looking at her in appreciation. “Read The Cremation of Sam McGee,†a man with a Santa Claus beard said. Robbie was stunned. Everyone in the restaurant was nodding in encouragement. She smiled, turned a few pages and as she began the famous Service poem, three or four people began to recite it with her. There are strange things done in the midnight sun By the men who toil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold.
