But the Scripture says, ‘perfect love casts out fear.’ Therefore it seems that saints should not fear after they have received the Spirit of adoption, but, as another Scripture says, they should ‘serve him without fear’ (1 John 4:18; Luke 1:74-75). Answer. Fear, as I have shown you, may be taken several ways. First, it may be used for the fear of devils. Second, it may be used for the fear of unbelievers. Third, it may be used for the fear that the Holy Spirit gives as a spirit of slavery. Or lastly, it may be used for the fear about which I have just been writing.”
