It’s February 2011, the recession is in full swing and jobs are harder to come by than honest politicians. Things are looking grim for unemployed conservationist Martin Varley until he lands a dream job in the Seychelles. He, his homeschooling wife, Joanna, and their four children pack what they can carry in their Emirates luggage allowance and leave the sodden shores of the UK for a new life in paradise.

The Seychelles is a basketful of sun-kissed islands cast adrift in the Indian Ocean, a thousand miles away from anywhere. It is a dream destination for honeymooners and holiday makers in search of sea and sand. This is seriously unfamiliar territory for an ordinary family from the north of England.
