The original MR2 had flat panels and sharp edges and was not the prettiest of cars. But with its all-round MacPherson strut suspension it handled well and with a twin-cam 1.6-litre 16-valve engine developing 122bhp it was fast too. It was a sales success. Five years later the car was replaced by one with the same designation but the styling was more rounded.
