Symbol of the executive branch of the United States government, the White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, DC, construction of this grand mansion in the neo-classical style began in 1792 and became complete in 1800, when President John Adams became its first resident. Every president since then has lived and worked in the White House.

Numerous changes have been made over the years to create the building Americans know. When Thomas Jefferson moved into it in 1801, he had it expanded outward, creating two colonnades, which were ultimately connected to the East and West Wings built by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902. Despite being gutted by fire in the Burning of Washington by British troops during the War of 1812, the White House was reconstructed almost immediately, though President Madison kept the original design. Its distinctive porticos - the square North Portico and the round South Portico - were added in 1825 and 1830. Other notable expansions and additions include the Oval Office, created by President Howard Taft, and a balcony on the second floor of the South Portico installed by President Truman in 1948. The interior underwent major reconstruction to upgrade the load-bearing walls and beams with a new steel framework at the same time.

Today, the White House stands as the symbol of the leading government of the free world, and chief defender of freedom. This coin is a tribute to that symbol and honors the office that it represents. With shiny bronze finish elegantly accented in durable enamel, the obverse features the White House's North Portico, while the reverse features the Seal of the President of the United States.
