The third volume in Dutton's series of Widor's orchestral music will delight and surprise in equal measure. Conductor Martin Yates has been a fervent champion, bringing to light many treasures by a composer previously known only for his Organ Symphonies. Widor wrote a considerable amount of orchestral music and that some of it, such as La Nuit de Walpurgis, was quite popular during the composer's lifetime. In addition to that evocative and gripping score, this recording features two other world premiere recordings - the delightful First Symphony and the unknown Violin Concerto, heard here in a superb performance by the brilliant Russian soloist Sergey Levitin.
