Schalk Burger & Sons is a family owned business that owns the historic farm Welbedacht, which means well thought out in Dutch, in Wellington.

The family is internationally known for their rugby prowess with both the Dad and eldest son, also Schalk, having played for the Springboks. Junior also becoming the 2004 International Rugby Player of the Year. Their estate range Welbedacht has won an array of awards and their Meerkat Range, South Africa's most gregarious wine, has become a real favourite.

The wines start when they hand select the bunches of grapes in their vineyards and make the wine in their unique cellar, which was designed to suit the fruit.

Describing the 2005 harvest as ‘a roller coaster ride of gritted teeth and silent prayer’, Schalk Burger and winemaker Jacques Wentzel are particularly excited about the quality of their Pinotage and barrel-fermented Chenin, both from decades-old bush vines. But look out, also for their ‘very special, serious’ blend named ….no, not Rugby field, but CRICKET PITCH, after the Welbedacht oval, situated alongside the beautifully restored homestead.
