Sherlock Holmes wins Art Directors Guild Award

The infamous Art Directors Guild Award ceremony held last Saturday night saw Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Guy Ritchie’s latest film Sherlock Holmes take away an award each.

Icelandic director Karl Júlíusson (of The Beautiful Country and K-19: The Widowmaker fame), won for his contemporary film Hurt Locker at the ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Art director Sarah Greenwood won for her period film Sherlock Holmes while Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg won for Avatar.

The popular film based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most eminent character, Sherlock Holmes is to see a sequel, according to the LA Times. Joel Silver told the paper that Ritchie is setting aside his planned film Lobo to make fast track the sequel to Holmes, which failed to top James Cameron’s Avatar at the box office.

Ritchie’s film made $389 million since it was released on Christmas day last year, and has not yet been released in Japan, France, Germany and other countries. The film also awarded star Robert Downey Jr. an unsuspecting Golden Globe which has critics claiming he has a shot for the Oscar to be nominated next week.

Sherlock Holmes is Ritchie’s success since he first came onto the film scene in 1998 with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It can be pre-ordered on Blu-ray and DVD from WantItAll before it’s 2010-03-30 release.
