Hendrix lives on in his 11th posthumous album: “Valleys of Neptune”

2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, and the music industry plans on commemorating it with the release of a new CD and another Experience Hendrik tribute tour. Each performance sees three-hours of the world’s greatest guitarists pay tribute to the guitar god.

The lineup includes former Hendrix bandmate Billy Cox, Brad Whitford from Aerosmith, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang and Living Colour who perform the brief-but-brilliant set. Also on the set performing Hendrix originals with a creative interpretation are David Hildago from band Los Lobos, Cesar Rosas, Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Layton from Double Trouble and blues artists Hubert Sumlin and Ernie Isley.

The Hendrix Experience tribute tour has been running since 2000 across the United States. This year there are 20 concerts from 4 until 28 March during which the latest Hendrix album “Valleys of Neptune” will be released.

Although he only released three albums by his death on September 18, 1970 – “Are You Experienced?”, “Axis: Bold as Love” and “Electric Ladyland” – he recorded a staggering amount of music of which has been stockpiled at various recording studios. With these bits and chunks of music, Hendrix representatives have released 11 posthumous albums on the guitarists behalf. The latest of these is “Valleys of Neptune” which bears 12 previously unreleased studio recordings.

Because of the nature of the recordings and their age, the production quality is not perfect, but perhaps as great as listening to Hendrix on vinyl. The tracks on the album were recording a year before the artist’s death, where he experimented with songs for his fourth and unfinished album.
