Laurence Fishburne in new Predators flick

"Matrix" and "Event Horizon" star Laurence Fishburne, along with Adrian Brody of “The Pianist” fame are starring side-by-side in the next Predators film to be released in July this year. The big names may be what the series needs to pick it up from the tired “Aliens vs Predator” franchise, yet they weren’t big when the film was made.

Producer Robert Rodriguez has been working on the screenplay for the Predator sequel recently, even though it was shot in 1994, which at the time would have made it the third installment of the film series. Why Fox are only releasing now means it’s most likely not going to revolutionize sci-fi flicks or even the original Arnold Schwartzernegger Predator film.

Director of “Vacany”, Nimród Antal has taken on the film which sees a bunch of humans, militray trained officers, being dumped on an alien planet that the Predators–skilled hunters– use as a sort of game reserve. The trailer, released earlier this week, does recapture that original Predators feel, being set in a jungly otherworld. Also true to its B-rate status, are the lame one-liners, which are uncharacteristically not delivered by brawny lumps of actor–epitomes of traditional strength. Rather, the new cast brings a more realistic view of strength to the franchise. Or so Brody tells MTV.

Critics doubt the film will revamp sci-fi or the series, but it can only be better than previous Predator sequels.
