Star Wars games to go MMO in 2011
Creator of the Star Wars franchise, LucasArts have finally released the trailer for the Star Wars: The Old Republic massively multiplayer online game (MMO): the biggest development to hit the game’s title. The online version, with BioWare, takes the game to a global level where the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic get to battle it out in real time, if real time is 3,500 before the events of the Star Wars films.
Set 300 years after the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games, the MMO begins with a truce between the two empires. The Jedi are settled on their original home Tython, while the Sith relocate to Korriban and setup a Sith Academy. The tentative balance is obviously upset, giving players of both sides something to do.
Players begin by creating their own character, the first step of which is to choose Sith or Jedi. Jedi categories of characters include Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular. The Sith, as in the films, appear as Bounty Hunter, Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent and Sith Inquisitor. Each type of character will come with their own backstory which is affected by the moral decisions the players make. The game will see players fight side-by-side or face-to-face depending on their affiliations and decisions. The battles will take place in dynamic Star Wars combat.
LucasArts say the game will be ready for a 2011 Northern Spring. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is available from WantItAll.
