This year is the year popular animated sea sponge SpongeBob Squarepants turned 25. SpongeBob celebrated his birthday on the 14th of July. Now, may 25 seems a little much for a cartoon that doesn’t seem quite that old. It’s true that the series has only been on air since 1999, so how can SpongeBob be 25 years old? 

Well, in any episode where SpongeBob needs to show someone an ID card, you’ll see his date of birth reads 1986. And actually, even though his series is only about half that age, SpongeBob the character has been around for quite a bit longer. Stephen Hillenburg, who created SpongeBob and his friends, actually started out his career as a marine biologist. While he was researching and teaching the the Ocean Institute in California, he drew a cartoon called The Intertidal Zone. He started this cartoon in 1984, and during its run it introduced many of the characters that would find their way into the SpongeBob Squarepants series, including a sea sponge called Bob the Sponge. This Bob actually looked like a sea sponge though, unlike SpongeBob, who looks more like a kitchen sponge. However, if you include the makeover, the character really is about 25 years old. How about that!
