HANK WILLIAMS, SR and FRED ROSE Two of the first three members in the Country Music Hall of Fame receive an advance of 1 for the rights to "A Mansion on the Hill." Carbon Document signed in ink: "Hank Williams", "Fred Rose", 4 conjoined pages, 8½x11. No place, 1947 November 3. Standard Uniform Popular Songwriters Contract, whereby Milene Music receives the rights to the title words and music of a song titled "A Mansion on the Hill." The writers are to receive an advance of 1, deductible from any subsequent payment. They are to receive 3 cents per copy of any sheet music of the song subsequently sold, and 50% of net sums earned by the publisher. Additional terms govern sales outside the US. Also signed on behalf of the publisher by "Wesley H. Rose". FRED ROSE (1897-1954) was already a successful songwriter and music producer, in and out of country music when he met young HANK WILLIAMS in 1946. Rose, who had worked with Fats Waller, Roy Acuff and Gene Autry, among others, wrote many hits of his own, including "Pins and Needles," "It's a Sin" and "Texarkana Baby." After a brief audition, he signed Williams on the spot, and became his manager shortly afterward. Williams, who debuted at the Grand Ole Opry on June 11, 1949, became a country legend in the few years remaining before his untimely death. His biggest hits included "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Your Cheating Heart". Williams died in the back of his chauffer-driven Cadillac on New Year's Day, 1953. Ironically his single, "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," hit the top of the charts immediately after his death. In 1961, Williams and Rose, along with Jimmie Rodgers, were the first three persons inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
