This is an animatronic baby gorilla head from the 1988 primatial drama Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey. The film tells the story of Dian Fossey (Sigourney Weaver), a woman who infiltrates a band of gorillas—studying them, loving them, protecting them—before being murdered, presumably by poachers. At one point, Fossey (Weaver) tracks down a stolen baby gorilla and finds it in a crate. This gorilla, among many others in the film, is animatronic. The face, created by legendary special make-up effects artist Rick Baker, is made of foam latex, with hand-punched hair, and glass eyes. The face is sculpted around a plastic skull full of elaborate mechanics—wires, circuits, hinges—all of which caused the gorillas mouth, nose, and eyes to move. This is held in a vice which is attached to a wood board for support. The entire display measures about 12" x 9" x 7" (30cm x 23cm x 18cm). This piece is still in great condition. The foam latex has dried and hardened, but has not cracked. This piece was acquired directly from Rick Baker and includes a Certificate of Authenticity from Baker.
