Prolific horror writer Stephen King (born in 1947) burst onto the scene with Carrie (1974), which, like many of his other works, was adapted for the big screen. His other books include 'Salem's Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), Cujo (1981), Pet Sematary (1983), Misery (1987), The Tommy Knockers (1988), Dolores Claiborne (1993), The Green Mile (1996) and Dreamcatcher (2000), and King has also written acclaimed short stories as well as novels under the pen name of Richard Bachman.
