Under Shaka Zulu, the Zulu warrior carried a short stabbing spear with an approximate 8 inch blade over 1.5 inches wide fastened with wire wrapping to a 30 long wooden shaft. The ZULU IKLWA is a shorter-style assegai. This weapon was known as the iklwa or ixwa for the sound that was heard as it was withdrawn from the victim's wound. Made famous in the Zulu Wars of South Africa, as seen in the films Zulu and Zulu Dawn and used by the Zulu tribe during the Battle of Isandlwana, the Battle of Rorke's Drift, and the Battle of Ulundi during the Zulu war in 1879 South Africa.
