Death Note

The manga and anime series Death Note has become very popular, not just in Japan but around the world. The story is about an intelligent and bored young student called Light Yagami who finds a notebook dropped by a death god called Ryuk. Light discovers that he can kill anyone in the world by writing their name in this deadly notebook while picturing their face. He resolves to create a new world order by killing all evil people, with himself as the divine ruler.  Both Light and one of the the enigmatic detectives pursuing his case, L, are extremely popular figures among fans. It's a tall order for the actors in the Japanese as well as the American live action movie to portray these characters in a way that wouldn't let their fans down. Though no Death Note fan can truly feel let down, seeing as how much Death Note merchandise is available. From the comics and anime to notebooks, statuettes, keyhangers, plushies, etc. 

Even video games, professional as well as fan made, such as this Death Note game in which you must win the confidence of and befriend either L or Light, so that you can fight alongside one or the other to prevent or bring about the new world order. Who's side will you pick?
