The Dual Screen and Multiplayer
Nintendo DS
Unique for its dual screen (DS),
the Nintendo DS handheld game console features a similar design to that
of the Game Boy Advance SP with two LCD screens – the bottom
screen functions as a touch screen. Better than previous handheld gaming
consoles, the Nintendo DS has more functionality including multiplayer
gameplay.
The Wi-Fi connection allows players
with a DS to connect to the Nintendo online service with the USB connector
or wireless router. Various online games and web browser are available
for the DS.
The Download Play allows users to
play multiplayer with other DS users. If systems are within wireless
range of each other, one system can host the other to play two players.
The Wii also provides a Nintendo Channel with downloadable games for
the DS (users connect to to WiiConnect24).
The wireless functionality can also
be used to instant message other users when in range. The stylus can
be used to write messages or draw pictures on the touch screen. With
4 areas for chat at once, up to 16 people can connect at once.
Unlike many other consoles, the Nintendo
DS is backwards compatible, allowing older games (such as those from
the Game Boy Advance) to be used. These however can only be used with
single players and are not compatible with the link-up mode. These games
only display on one of the two screens.
