Masterpiece Classic: Downton AbbeyLike its name says it is a masterpiece,
Downton Abbey was placed tenth on the Top 10 TV programmes of 2010, and came second in the Top 10 TV dramas of 2010 list, beaten only by
Doctor Who. It came first in the Top 10 new drama category. To top it all this series was rated as one of the most expensive British TV show ever produced. It is also the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited, with UK ratings exceeding 10 million viewers. Downton Abbey -- a sprawling, lavish Edwardian mansion nestled in the Yorkshire landscape -- needs an heir. Dame Maggy Smith stars as Violet, the stubborn Dowager Countess of Grantham matriarch of Downtown. Hugh Bonneville stars as her son, the stoic, unflapple Lord Crawley. Elizabeth McGovern is his far-sighted American wife, Cora (From Academy Award-winner Julian Fellowes). This is the original un-edited UK version of the program. The very first episode of this series basically revolves around April 1992 whereby we see Lord Grantham’s cousin, James Crawley, who is Lord Grantham's heir presumptive, and his son, Patrick, both die in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. With no male offspring, who is the new heir to the Grantham's fortune? Bates is employed by Lord Grantham. Episode two chiefly occurs the situation whereby we see Matthew Crawley, a young solicitor and the new heir arrives at Downton Abbey with his mother, Isobel. They, the other Crawleys and the servants all have difficulty adjusting to differences in class and culture whilst facing some resentment from certain family members and staff.
Episode three set in the winter of 1912–1913. Lady Mary is seduced by a handsome visiting Turkish diplomat, who dies in her bed the same night. To avoid a scandal, Lady Grantham and a maid help her to move the body back into the Turk's own bed. Meanwhile, Bates's attempt to correct his limp almost has tragic consequences. All of the other episodes would be easy to grasp and follow if you have captured the storylines of these above-mentioned episodes, you will be able to capture the rest of the other episodes.
