Google tribute: Sesame street turns 40
This week has seen doodles of the Sesame Street Muppets take on the Google logo on international derivatives of the search engine. Why? The much-loved American educational show turned 40 this week, a milestone proving that edutainment made it into the internet era.
The fifth decade of the show will begin on Tuesday the 10th of November, marking the 4,187th show, with an epically appropriate guest – Michelle Obama. The ethnic diversity portrayed in the show, aimed at inner-city pre-schoolers, could not be better paid tribute to than by having the first African-American first lady take the stage.
No stranger to celebrity guests, the show has seen the likes of Kofi Annan, Ricky Gervais and James Blunt deliberate the importance of reading, writing and arithmetic to their captivated audience.
Winning hundreds of Emmy awards and broadcast in about 150 countries around the globe, Sesame Street has been and will continue to provide a public service, namely educating young viewers through storytelling and songs.
