Final Fantasy meets the iPhone

Final Fantasy meets the iPhone

After only one short week on the Apple store, Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II have knocked current king of the apps, Plants vs Zombies, off its pedestal. The Final Fantasy Role Playing Games (RPGs) shot to the top to become the most downloaded app, proving that not only cheap games take the cake.

With the immanent release of Final Fantasy XIII, creators Square Enix are giving the older and perhaps more popular versions of the game a mobile reboot by making the first and second installments of the game available for download on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The games though are going for a hefty £5 (about R60 at the time of writing), which, being the most downloaded games, makes them the Top Grossing Apple applications in the global market. FFI seems to be more popular in both the US and UK (being number three and number one respectively) while the second installment just makes it into the top ten download.

The original versions of the game were launched for the old Nintendo Entertainment System in the late 1980s but have been revamped for modern mobile gaming replete with special controls for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

Less important than the position the games are holding and maintaining on the charts is the lesson it teaches gamers – retro games still rock especially if they consider that Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II fans are now old enough to purchase their own iPhones.
